You will need to obtain* and read one of the three course-recommended graphic novels below. Once you have chosen a novel, ensure you have read at least half of it before continuing on to the 5.2 Hot Topic Assignment:

  • American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

  • How I Made it to 18 by Tracy White

  • Book Two: Ghost Stories (in Essex County) by Jeff Lemire

*You should have received one of these graphic novels in your materials. If you have not, check with your school facilitator, teacher or library to see if you can obtain a copy of one of these specific titles.

Use a β€œWhat? So What? Now What?” chart to monitor your observations as you read and study each section in the graphic novel. Starting these charts as you start reading your graphic novel will be helpful for later assignments and ensure you are closely reading the book.  As well, tracking your thoughts, questions, and observations will aid in your understanding of the story.

Download the "What? So What? Now What?" Graphic Novel Chart below, to help you analyze the graphic novel as you read it.

Record your observations in these categories as you did with your initial investigation of visual images when Understanding Theme in Visuals.
