Lesson 3 — Activity 2: What Are Nouns and Pronouns?

examples of nouns
Let's look more closely now at two parts of speech: nouns and pronouns.

A noun is:
  •  a word that is used to name a person, place, thing, or idea

A pronoun is:

  •  a word that can be used in place of a noun

Here are some examples of nouns used in different sentences:

  • The Edmonton Oilers have been in the National Hockey League since 1979.
  • The Calgary Flames used to be based in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Talent and strength are important qualities in a hockey player.

"Hockey player" is a noun.

They have won five Stanley Cups!
Here are some examples of pronouns used in different sentences:
  • The Edmonton Oilers are one of the most successful teams since joining the NHL in 1979, as they have won five Stanley Cups.
  • When the Calgary Flames played in Atlanta, they were known as the Atlanta Flames.

Look once more at the sentences above. You can see that each of those highlighted words replaces one of the nouns used earlier in the sentence.

Using a pronoun allows you to talk about someone or something without having to repeat the noun.

Think about how the first sentence would sound if you didn’t use a pronoun to replace the noun:

  • The Edmonton Oilers are one of the most successful teams since joining the NHL in 1979, as the Edmonton Oilers have won five Stanley Cups.

Isn't the sentence much more interesting and more natural when the nouns are not repeated as often?
