You have had an opportunity to review several poems and reflect on how poets engage their readers. In this assignment, you will try your hand at writing a poem.
The Assignment
Step 1: Choose Option A or Option B to complete this assignment.
Option A:
Write a poem of your own. You can use your 1.3 Diary Entry, 2.1 Letter as inspiration, or write an βadviceβ poem to an audience of your peers. If you have another topic in mind, that is great; whatever inspires you! See the student exemplar for help with this option.Option B:
Review some examples of blackout poetry. You can also do your own search to find even more examples than what are shared on the video. Utilize this Google Slide to create your blackout poem. See this student exemplar for help with this option.Step 2: Review your poem.
- Have you made effective use of at least two poetic techniques to engage your reader?
- Have you incorporated at least two examples of figurative language?
- How can you revise your poem's words, structure, or techniques for maximum effect?
- Make revisions.
Step 3: Write a short paragraph that explains the choices you made that contributed to your poem the most. Focus on the poetic techniques you incorporated.
Step 4: Complete the self-assessment rubric (in the Document Links tab) and submit it with your poem and paragraph.
Choose from any of the texts we've read so far in the course to create your blackout poem. These texts include: If you are choosing one of these texts, you will need to make a copy of the original text (scan or photocopy) to create your blackout poem.

- Submit both documents for formative feedback. Note: If you chose Option B, the self-assessment rubric is included in the Google Slide provided, so you may only be submitting one document/link.
- If you are submitting a Google document, copy and paste the sharing link into the online text space. Ensure share settings are set to "Anyone with the link can comment."
- If you are submitting a Word or PDF document, upload the file.
