3.2 Analysing Poetry
Completion requirements
Analysing Poetry
Your last assignment allowed you to gain some practice in analysing poetry. You need to review your teacher feedback for this work very carefully, and understand where all
necessary improvements need to be made. Now you will be reading and choosing four poems to analyze in the same way, using the same graphic organizer. It is really important that you contact your teacher for help if you have any questions about this
work before you begin, or as you are working through it. This assignment is weighted heavier than previous assignments in your grade book, so it is really important that you have a full understanding of the expectations of the assignment.
What will completing these poetry readings and analysis help you to know, understand, and do?
Know - will equip you with knowledge of the correct poetry figurative language terminology for figures of speech and sound devices
Understand - will help you to recognize and appreciate that well structured and meaningful poetry requires purposeful and skillful creation in order to effectively convey its messages
Do - will enable you to identify various figurative language techniques that writers use with intentional purpose

Step 1: Read the following poems from your Sightlines 10 textbook and choose the three poems that resonate, or "speak to you," the most. For each chosen poem, you will complete the Personal Response worksheet. Consider the fact that a more lengthy poem will sometimes give you more selection to complete the required work. Also try to choose poems
to which you feel a personal connection. It is expected that you will select various figures of speech/sound devices whenever possible so you are best demonstrating your knowledge, and are not simply repeating your knowledge of a few figures of speech.
Each poem will be worth 20 marks for a total of 60 marks for this work. As always, please contact me if you have any questions, and phone contact always works the best! You can listen to the sound track of "I Am A Rock" (Simon & Garfunkel) on
YouTube if you wish to experience it as a song.
