Assessment 3
Catalogue Comparison
Timothy Eaton built a successful chain of stores called "Eatons". His motto was "use no deception in the smallest degreeโnothing you cannot defend before God or Man."
Canadians were very spread out and isolated, especially on the Prairies. Eaton introduced a new way of shopping to Canada: catalogues. These became important to prairie farmers who called them "The Prairie Bible". Some immigrants learned to read using his catalogues. Others used catalogues for hockey shin pads, insulation, and outhouse toilet paper.
Old catalogues are primary documents. Because they were published long ago, we can study them to learn about how people lived in the past. This assessment involves comparing items in catalogues from the past to explain how the lives of Canadian people changed from the time of the Depression (1930s) to the 1960s and to today.
In three paragraphs as provided on the Assessment 10-3 Template page, write about how the items that appear in the catalogues help us understand the changes that occurred in Canadiansโ way of life during the 30 years between 1930 and 1960. Be sure to reflect on how the catalogues provide insights into how the quality of life for Canadians changed over time.

Resources for Inquiry
Two sets of catalogues are available:
- Tool catalogues from 1931 to 1973. (Choose three, each from different decades.) If you have difficulty accessing this site, then use the three catalogues provided below.
- Canadian catalogues from 1800s to 1975 (Choose three, each from different decades.)
Instructions
- Choose three categories from the following: tools, toys, household appliances, hobbies, entertainment, furniture, weapons, or toys. Look at the items available in the catalogues from three different time periods.
- Choose one item in the category for comparison. For example, under tools you might compare watches from 1920 to watches in 1950 to watches in 2017.
- Study the items in the catalogues to see
- Differences in what was available (What items are no longer for sale or what new items are available?)
- Why the items are different (Are there changes to the materials from which items were made, improvements in technology, new needs and wants?)
- Changes in what items cost (What do price changes tell us about the people who are buying?)
- Did you save the final draft of your work?
- Did you answer every question?
- Are you submitting all parts and pages of the assignment?
