ELA3105-ABED_1: 2.6 Novel Study Roles

Please be aware that this assignment will be time-consuming because you will complete 4 tasks. To aid your understanding of each Essential Question (EQ), you will explore your chosen novel by taking 4 different roles.

Step 1	Carefully examine each role (Analyst, Author, Artist and Archivist) and each EQ. Use this planning page to determine which role best suits each EQ. Also see the planning document in Document Links.
Step 2	Complete each Novel Role for each EQ. Each role and each EQ can only be used once. You must address details and ideas from the entire novel, so your active reading and sticky note summaries will help you immensely now! There is flexibility in the format you choose for each role. Some may be best suited to a chart or organizer, while others might work well as a PowerPoint or other visual format. Be sure to review the exemplars.
Step 3	You must create a Works Cited page for any sources and images used for any role. The Citation Machine website can help you create your Works Cited page in MLA format. Instructions are here. You will have used outside resources for the Archivist Role, so you'll definitely need a Works Cited page. To find resources, do a Google research on your EQ topic. If you are looking for a poem, websites like www.poemhunter.com could be helpful. You will need images for the Artist Role. You can draw them, but consider obtaining them from www.pixabay.com because of Pixabay states that all images are "released under CC0. With CC0, no copyrights apply and the contents may be used freely without giving credits or asking for permission. This makes our images safe to use." Just avoid the sponsored images (Shutterstock) near the top. If you see a note saying that an image is in the public domain, you are free to use it. You can also do an advanced Google image search and filter the results by selecting Tools→ Usage Rights→ select one of the four "free" options (any option except "Not filtered by license"). If you want to use Thinkstock images, GettyImages or images from elsewhere, you will have to provide the artist's name, the work of art in italics, the date of creation, the institution and city where the work is housed, the website, and the date of access. That's a lot to do! NOTE: ADLC may have purchased usage rights for some of the Thinkstock images you see in the exemplars and throughout this course. Do not use images that are not free to use or share without a license, especially sponsored Shutterstock images.
Step 4	Submit your 4 polished responses as PDF or MS Word files.
