Almost everything around you—your home, your neighbourhood, and your community—has involved planning, design, and measurement. In the graphic shown, small images are included to show what is required to take the building of a house from blueprints, through trades, to the finished product. All of these steps involved measurement. In this unit you will explore how measurement is used throughout people’s daily lives.

In Module 1 you will investigate the International System of Units (SI) for weights and measures. You may know this system by another name, the metric system. In Module 2 you will examine the imperial system of weights and measures. The imperial system is still used in many trades in Canada, and is standard in the United States. In each system you will explore units for length and distance, area and volume, mass, and temperature. You will also learn to move between different units.

In your Unit 1 Project you will design a habitat or product for sale. You will draw your design by hand or digitally. Then you will use measurement and other skills developed in this unit to communicate aspects of your design, including the quantity of materials required to construct the product, and how much space the product will occupy. For now, watch “Ready to Start Unit 1.”

Like the characters in “Ready to Start Unit 1,” you will gain the mathematical expertise you need to complete the Unit 1 Project by working through Modules 1 and 2. Before you start Module 1, skip ahead and read about the Unit 1 Project. Then, as you complete the modules, think about how you will use the skills you learn to complete the Unit 1 Project.
