UNIT 2

NUTRITION

Nutrition is a key element to physical wellness. During adolescence, your body is still growing, and by eating a proper diet, you are providing yourself with the essential nutrients and vitamins for optimal development. By eating a healthy and balanced diet, your body is able to perform better, not only physically but intellectually as well. A healthy diet allows you to better ward off illnesses and allows you to maintain a healthy weight.

Obesity and Prevention

Obesity in Canada is a problem. According to a study completed by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) in 2011, approximately 25% of adults and nearly 9% of children aged 6 — 17 are obese.

We need to take action. Yes, fast food and pre-made dinners are easy, but they are full of fat, sodium, refined carbohydrates, and preservatives. If you can't read the ingredients, you probably shouldn't be eating a lot of them! One of the best things you can do for you and your family is to learn to cook. When grocery shopping, stick to the perimeter of the store and load your cart with fresh produce, dairy, whole grains, and lean meats. Try to avoid the centre aisles as much as possible, and learn how to read nutrition facts labels!

Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are common amongst both teenage males and females. Two common eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia. If you or someone you know has an eating disorder, it is important to seek help
