6.06 La vida en general

Thus far, you have learned different ways to express yourself using the subjunctive mood. Now, we are going to use this mood to express general ideas. We are going to use, what is called Impersonal Expressions, to create generalized ideas about different situations. Let's begin!

You probably remember the subjunctive formula we studied before: [ S¹ + V¹ + que + S² + V² ]

In the formula the Impersonal Expression will take the place of S¹ + V¹, and sometimes the place of the que as well.

Por ejemplo:

es bueno it is good es común it is common
es necesario it is necessary es difícil it is difficult
es dudoso it is doubtful es extraño it is strange
es fácil it is easy es importante it is important
es imposible it is impossible es increíble it is incredible
es una lástima it is a shame es malo it is bad
es preferible it is preferable es sorprendente it is surprising
es de esperarse it is to be expected es lamentable it is regretful
ojalá hopefully tal vez maybe

es mejor it is better
es posible it is possible
es preciso it is precise
es probable it is probable
es urgente it is urgent
es conveniente it is convenient
puede ser it can/may be
es una suerte it is lucky
quizás perhaps

However, there are some of these expressions that will trigger indicative in verb two because they express certainty or facts. For example:

At times you may encounter a sentence that includes an impersonal expression but without S² in the formula, when that happens the infinitivewill follow the Impersonal Expression. This happens when a person is making a general statement without referring to a specific person.

  • Es importante estudiar.
  • Es bueno trabajar mucho.
  • Es necesario tener calificaciones.

Depending on which Impersonal Expression you have in V¹ and how it is presented you may have indicative, infinitive, or subjunctive in V².
