Guidelines for Completion of Activity Hours/ Appropriate Supervision/ Completing Course Plan

Prior to completing activity hours, you will need to have your course plan approved.  Your course plan must show that you will be working on improving your fitness or physical skill in a number of activities.  Below are guidelines to assist you in the choices you make for activities and acceptable expert supervisors.

Definitions of Activity related terms in this course

  • Leisure activity: an activity that is done for enjoyment, without 'expert supervisor' instruction that the parent is allowed to supervise.  Examples: bowling, mini golf billiards, skiing. Often this will be a Dimension 4 (Games) activity.
  • Fitness Apps- Applications that can be downloaded onto a smartphone/tablet and have the ability to provide data on a person's movement, record time and distance traveled.  (example: MapMyFitness)
  • Fitness Device: Wearable technology that can track a person's fitness activities. (examples: Fitbit, apple watch)
  • Instructed Hours: Hours that are completed under the direction of an expert supervisor where the student is taught the activity.
  • Non Instructed hours: Hours that are completed under the supervision of a parent or other adult that are not being done under expert supervision.  Activities like swimming, hiking/walking, skiing may be included in this category.
  • Expert Supervisor: someone with training to be instructing/teaching an activity.  Expert supervisors are only qualified to supervise activity hours for the activity they have training for.  Examples: Yoga instructors can be a supervisor for Yoga, but not for Basketball. Hockey coaches can be a supervisor for Hockey, but not for hiking.

Overall Course Balance Guidelines

  • The VAST MAJORITY of activity hours must be Instructed hours.
  • No more than 5 hours in the course can be completed under leisure activities (activities where you do not have an 'expert' supervisor instructing you towards improvement) where the parent will be the main supervisor.
  • Leisure activities may only be done in a maximum of 1 dimension
  • A fitness app can be used in lieu of an expert supervisor, but a parent/guardian must also sign off on the accuracy of the data provided.

General Allowances for Parent/Guardian Supervision, in which direct permission must be requested from the teacher

  • 5 hours in ONE dimension to meet minimum required hours, typically these are leisure activities (examples: bowling, mini golf, walking, billiards).  The activity can't have a high level of safety concern (ex. swimming, rock climbing, Paddleboarding)
  • Parent/Guardian can sign off on the number of hours a student skis or snowboards; however, we still recommend that students start these hours with a lesson from a trained instructor. The teacher will determine the exact maximum number of hours allowable for skiing on an individual student basis but it will never exceed 10 hours.
  • Any time spent practicing for a dance project in the course can be supervised by a parent/guardian.

A parent is allowed to be the main supervisor in a maximum of 2 dimensions, with no more than 15 total hours. This allowance requires teacher approval and is not guaranteed.

Fitness Apps and Fitness devices

Some activities can be supervised through the use of fitness tracking apps. Examples include: hiking, walking, outdoor cycling, outdoor running)

A maximum of 15 total hours, and no more than 10 hours in a single activity will be allowed to be supervised through the use of a fitness tracking device.  Using a tracking device has very specific rules and only pertains to specific activities.

Please refer to the fitness app/device page for more detailed information about the use of fitness apps and devices.

Guidelines for Specific types of Activities

Apply the following parameters to different activities within the PE program.  If you have questions about other activities, contact your teacher.

Activity  Acceptable supervision, other parameters that must be met to include in course plan
Indoor or outdoor walking / Hiking
  • Can only use in one dimension, as both are based on walking (put all hours in the dimension that benefits your course plan).
  • If done for over 5 hours, you must use Fitness tracking device and submit tracking data with your monthly log.  A parent/guardian will then sign off as the supervisor confirming authenticity of your tracking data.
  • Activity must not be done alone.
  • Maximum of 10 hours
Outdoor Cycling (mountain biking or street biking)

  • Can only use in one dimension as both are based on cycling (put all hours in the dimension that benefits your course plan)
  • If done for over 5 hours, you must use Fitness tracking device and submit tracking data with your monthly log.  A parent/guardian will then sign off as the supervisor confirming authenticity of your tracking data.
  • Activity must not be done alone.
  • Maximum of 10 hours
  • One picture for the dimension must show student wearing a helmet and other safety equipment if required.
  Paddleboarding / Swimming
