Specific Guidelines: 'Working Out' for Activity Hours

One of the methods to obtain hours in PE is through 'working out'.

Working out is an individual activity that can include activities like:
  • Weight Lifting
  • Cardio on equipment like: treadmills, elliptical machines, step climbers, rowing machines, or stationary bikes.
  • Cardio: Running on indoor or outdoor tracks, biking, hill running

If you take a class which is being lead by an instructor, it is not considered 'working out' and needs to be requested by each class name (Boot Camp, Circuit training, Core, Spin, etc).  Most fitness classes are Dimension 5 activities unless they are specific to flexibility and core.  Classes like Yoga and Pilates are Dimension 3 activities.

You must complete workouts in public facilities.  The use of home gyms for the purpose of PE is not allowed.

Supervision of Working Out

Supervision requirements for working out depend upon the number of hours you are completing.

If you wish to complete more than 10 hours of working out, you must submit a Request for Unlimited Workout Hours form. This form must be submitted with your Course plan Proposal or prior to a Monthly log which contains workout hours.

In order to count more than 10 hours or working out in the course plan, you must work with a certified trainer to design a workout plan.  Because the certified trainer will be working with you on the creation of the plan and ensuring you know how to perform all exercises, this plan is considered instructed hours.  The certified trainer does not need to be present for all workout hours, but the workout plan MUST be reviewed and altered at least once during the duration of the PE course.
Counts as 'instructed' hours in overall activity hours balance.

Certified Trainers/ Fitness Professionals and Workout Plans

What are the basic requirements of the fitness professional.

In the PE program, to use unlimited hours, your workout plan must be designed specifically for your goals by a certified fitness professional. The fitness professional should meet with you and discuss your fitness goals as well as what type of access you have to fitness equipment.

How many times do I need to meet with the fitness professional?

You should plan to meet with the professional a minimum of 3 times throughout the course. The first session will be to discuss goals, make your workout plan, and to get the 'Request for Unlimited Workout Hours' form completed .  The middle session(s) will be to discuss progress and make alterations to the plan.  The last session would be to get your supervisor declaration signed as well as recap how the program worked for you and future directions.

Who qualifies as a certified trainer or fitness professional?

  • AFLCA,
  • Physiotherapists
  • Physical Trainers from Team/Organized Groups who have specialized training/certification
  • Physical Education Teachers who have a specialty in training or taken special training courses.
  • NCCP certified coach with certification in training

Who does not qualifies as a certified trainer or fitness professional? or types of workouts that do not qualify?

  • Teacher without specialized training
  • Specialized instructors of fitness areas who do not have other training (example: Yoga instructor)
  • Coaches of teams who do not have specialized training
  • Workouts must not be from generalized workout sites like 'bodybuilding.com'.

*Note: Many fitness groups/teams do some sort of organized fitness training.  If you want more than 10 hours of this to count towards PE, you must ensure that the coach/instructor of the program is properly certified and that the workout program is specifically designed for you. You will be required to fill out the 'Request for Unlimited Workout Hours' form.  General rule of thumb: If everyone on the team is doing the exact same workout, the workout has not be specifically designed for you and you will only be allowed to record a Maximum of 10 hours of working out.

Please contact your teacher if you have any questions regarding working out and the parameters of supervision.
