Factors of Identity
Language, traditions, religion and
spirituality, arts, choice of clothing and role models, relationship to the land, and ideologies are part of how people express their identities. Our identities are dynamic, they change or evolve over time as we are exposed to new influences.
Throughout our history, people have been able to manage that change with slow adaptation, but now, with so many new methods to communicate, identities change at a much faster rate. We are connected to a wide variety of people around the globe, and,
as a result of this exposure, we interact with other groups and cultures, which have an effect on how we define ourselves. In addition, as Canadians we live in a pluralistic society, made up of many groups, which provide us with new experiences and
new identities.
In this section, you will begin to look at the factors which have in part influenced your identity and how you see yourself in the world. You will gather important information from the series of readings on factors that influence your identity.
