Unit 5 Summary
In Unit 5 you explored the following questions:
How does government and economy influence each other?
What does that mean for me?
The government of Canada has a very important role to play in both the politics and the economics of Canada. Government must make political and economic decisions that are based on the values of our society to benefit all Canadians. Canadians pay taxes, such as income tax and Goods and Services Tax, to the government. These taxes pay for social programs including health care and income assistance. Economic decisions that government makes directly affects your quality of life and the quality of life of all Canadians.
The government of the United States also plays an important role in the economic decisions made to benefit its citizens. The American system, however, values individualism and encourages less government involvement. This results in a very different tax base and priorities for social programs and health care.
All political and economic decisions are a reflection of the political party that forms the government. The policies of each party indicate where the party is placed on the economic continuum.
The issue of the environment is one example in which economic and political decisions have an impact on your life. The need for resources to create products for consumer consumption can often pressure decisions to be made in favour of the producer. You as the consumer, however, can have a say in what products are made and how they are produced. Governments often mediate between the many stakeholders involved in environmental issues. It is the role of the government to make sound decisions in the interests of all stakeholders.
