Final Assessment - Short Stories II

In the final assignment for this unit, you will create a polished version of the short story that you planned in Lesson 5-5.

NOTE: This is almost the end of Language Arts 9, so it is time for you to demonstrate your very best writing skills. Take the time to work through each step of this lesson and show your teacher the kind of writer you really are. There will be references to concepts learned previously.

You will want to review the Writing Conventions Unit, if you haven't been doing that regularly.
Here are the instructions from the Assignment 5-7 file:

In your writing, be sure to
  • work through the writing process in this lesson
  • use your theme as a guide to develop plot, conflict, character, and point of view
  • choose specific details that allow the reader to visualize setting and character
  • develop character through word choice, sentence structure, and dialogue to create voice
  • use vocabulary that is interesting and effective (Use a variety of specific words.)
  • vary your sentence beginnings and your sentence structure
  • revise AND edit your work (Be sure you proofread it or have someone else proofread it before you submit it.)

This lesson will walk you through the writing process so that you may be proud of your polished story at the end.

The Writing Process

In Lesson 5-5 you completed a plan for your story.  That process would be considered your Pre-writing  phase and even some of the Writing phase. HOWEVER, you can see in the diagram above, there is still a lot of work to be done before you will be ready to submit your final polished copy for assessment

What is important to notice in Diagram 5-7-1 is the arrows. You can go back and forth from step to step as your writing requires.

Open your marked Assignment 5-5 file now.  Carefully read the feedback provided. It is intended to help you make your story as engaging as possible for your chosen audience.

Writing - First Draft

It is time to write the first full draft of your story.  You have a very strong outline of your story already. It is time to expand on those ideas and create the first draft of your masterpiece.

At this point:
  • Write the story you had planned in appropriate language for your audience.
  • Write sentences and paragraphs, even if they are not perfect. Don't worry about grammar and conventions at this point.
