Chapter 11 Assessment

Canada West Wants You


In 1896, Minister of the Interior, Clifford Sifton, developed a widespread publicity campaign to attract people to Canada’s West.

This campaign included the distribution of posters and pamphlets as well as the use of foreign and domestic journalists to spread the word about the great Canadian West.

The government targeted immigrants mainly from the United States, Great Britain, and Eastern Europe.


  1. Create a poster to attract immigrants to come and settle in Western Canada.

  2. Choose one of the target areas (United States, Great Britain, or Eastern Europe) as the focus for your poster.

  3. Your poster must
      • reflect why this particular area was targeted

      • show why people from this area would want to come to Canada

  4. You may view some examples of posters commissioned by Clifford Sifton during this period at the following site. (Note: These examples are for inspiration only; your poster must be an original piece of work.)

  5. Choose one of the following ways to present your poster. All formats require images and text.
      • Microsoft Word
      • PowerPoint presentation
      • Hand drawn (It should be scanned and submitted.)


Be sure your final product includes the following:

  • Pictures and words that show why your chosen area was targeted

  • Pictures and words that show why people in your chosen area would want to come to Canada
