    1. 1.1 Why do trees and forests have value?

1.2 In what ways do plants and animals live on, under, and among trees?

1.3 What role do trees have in nutrient cycles?

  • Trees are a natural resource.
  • Many products can be made from trees.
  • Humans appreciate nature and use it for recreation.
  • Animals of all kinds depend on trees and forests for food and places to live.
  • Forests have unique layers.
  • Trees, forest plants, and forest animals depend on each other.
  • Trees have important roles in the cycling of nutrients.
  • Trees have the ability to make their own food using photosynthesis.

  1. What makes trees unique?

    1. 2.1 How can you tell trees from other plants and from each other?

2.2 What can you learn from leaf shapes and tree growth patterns?

  • Trees have similar features; they are woody, perennial, and have roots as well as a main trunk with branches.
  • Coniferous trees bear cones, and most have needle-like green leaves that last the whole year.
  • Deciduous trees have flat leaves that fall off every year.
  • By studying leaf shapes and twigs, you can identify a tree species.
  • Using a dichotomous key helps you make "one-or-the-other" decisions to assist in tree identification.
  • Certain tree species are native to Alberta forests.
  • Counting tree rings can be used to determine the age of a tree.

  1. What effect do people have on trees and forests?

    1. 3.1 Why have people changed the way they use forests?

3.2 Are human actions making things better or worse for forests?

  • The use of trees and forests has changed throughout history.  For example, Native peoples used forests in various ways. Trees were felled for settlement.  People realized the value of trees during the 1930s (the Great Depression).
  • Many people are concerned with the use of forests and take action to conserve them.
  • Many serious issues affect forests such as pests.
  • Humans can take actions to reduce negative effects on trees and forests.
  • Actions are controversial.
