Plot and Point of View	Probably the most important literary device that writers consider in their novels and short stories is plot .   Writers manipulate plot in a variety of ways in order to capture the reader’s attention, create suspense, and tell the story.
Setting	Where and when a story is set, otherwise known as the setting , is an important literary element writers use.  Setting includes when the story as a whole takes place as well as the location of individual scenes within the story.  Setting also includes where the story takes place.
Character	Writers use a variety of literary devices in order to develop their characters and to make them as life-like and intriguing as possible.    Learn key terms and techniques regarding characterization  in the Character Tutorial.
Symbols and Irony	Symbols  and Irony  are two literary elements writers use to help convey meaning in a text.   Symbols allow writers to communicate big abstract ideas using physical objects, animals, or people.  Irony allows writers to communicate ideas in a creative way.
