Step 7:   Download the following Alternate Assignment 1.4 chart (in Word, Google doc, or PDF).  You will be prompted to hand in this chart with your poem for assessment in a later step of this assignment.

Step 8:   Complete your chart.

Step 9:   In the next portion of the assignment, you will compose own poem or song, modeling it after the poem you just analyzed in your chart.  Your own 10-line poem or song should contain these same elements as the original:

  • theme
  • tone
  • three poetic techniques
NOTE:  Here’s another option.  If you find it difficult to write an original poem, write a new stanza for the poem or song you analyzed in Step 6.  If you need assistance with this assignment, click on the apple icon at the top right of your screen for your teacher’s contact information.

Step 10:   Before you write your own poem for assignment 1.4, watch this video of Edmonton poet Mary Pinkoski talking about the process she went through while writing her performance poem entitled “Momentum.”  What strategies does she use that might help you in your own poem writing process?
