Unit 2

How Can Someone Make a Difference?

Lesson 3

More Stories of Fighting for Fairness

Can a student from Canada make a difference in a part of the world far away? Can one person help correct the wrongs of the past?  Who determines what those rights and wrongs are?

In this lesson, you will have the opportunity to choose a selection to read that is of interest to you.

You will

  • apply the reading strategies you have been practising
  • respond to the ideas of the selection
  • construct a timeline of events

Longer Biographies

Both Making Waves and My Grandpa are longer biographies. They use the textbox to include additional information that is important to the reading.

Click each coloured row for information about the activity.

Before Choosing a Story

Consider both selections in Literacy in Action, pages 18 to 25, before making a choice.

As you have done previously,

  • Scan each selection.
  • Note the images, text boxes, and captions.
  • Choose one of the selections.
  • You may read both selections if you wish!
