Think Like A Reader

Time To Think Like A Reader

Information under โ€œThink Like a Readerโ€ on page 9 of Literacy in Action 4-A lists several strategies you can use to improve your reading skills and to understand what you read:

  • Read with a purpose
  • Crack the code
  • Make meaning
  • Analyze what you read
Read what each of these strategies means in the green box to the right.

Use these strategies while you read to improve your reading skills and to better understand what you read.

Read with a purpose means to know why you are reading about real-life events. What might you learn from each story?

Crack the code refers to reading skills you learned to discover the meaning of new words. In this unit, you will learn about compound words, prefixes, and suffixes and how they can help you read better.

Make meaning by determining how events in a story might apply to your life. What lesson can you learn about a characterโ€™s choices? How can you use that lesson as you make choices that may affect your family and friends? How can you use or recognize courage in your surroundings?

Analyze what you read means to think carefully about details as you read. When finished reading, consider what these details had to contribute to the whole story.

Whenever you are reading, think about your reading skills. Decide which reading strategy can help you.
