Time to pause and check.

  • Were your questions answered?
  • Did you get some information you didn’t ask questions about?

If you put together the answers to your questions, and the other information you learned, you can do the last step of the strategy – summarize. Remember that to summarize is to recount in short form (using words, a web, a chart) what the selection is about.

Summarize

When we summarize, we do not recount every sentence or every fact.

We choose only the most important information from the selection, and write it in our own words. How do we know what information is the most important?

Think about the main idea of a paragraph or section, then choose “Key ideas” that support that main idea. Those are the ideas you put in a summary.

You have two assignments to help you learn to summarize. The first is a summarizing Key Ideas worksheet and the other is an entry in your Saving Habitat Chart.

Go to the next page for more information about these assignments.
