Unit 6

Amazing Places!

Lesson 6

Reader's Notebook

Reflect On Your Reading

So far, you have practised your three reading strategies of

  • use what you know
  • decide on important points
  • summarize the main ideas

You have read three different reports on protected parks and learned what kind of information you find in reports.

You will answer questions on this information in the Reader's Notebook: Reflect on Your Reading page. Open this now and look at the first chart there.

Look back to the summaries you created for the three protected parks.

Make a list that includes two ways protected parks are the same and two ways that they are different in the chart. An example could be: there are different animals there (different) and they are all protected (same).

Look on page 134 of your Literacy in Action 4B book. There you will see some new words that describe some parks and the strategies listed.

  • You also see a boy with a thought bubble that says "I worry that too many visitors may spoil the protected parks".
    • Do you think that's possible?

  • Read the following information:
    • If you remember, protected parks means that Government agencies look after the parks because of their natural beauty and wildlife there. It is sometimes hard for tourists to see these places and enjoy what they have to offer.
    • They are protected because they do not want people to get hurt or to harm the environment there.

The second chart on the Reader's Notebook page is a plus and minus chart.

  • Review and think about how you feel about having tourists in protected parks.
  • Then list three reasons tourists should be allowed in protected parks (plus) and three reasons why tourists should not be allowed there (minus).
  • Finally, as you reflect on the strategies you used, which strategy did you find most helpful in reading one of the reports from Protected Parks. Explain how you used it and why it was helpful to you on the Reader's Notebook page.
