3.8.2 Impact of National Interests Assignment
Completion requirements
As we have learned, the pursuit of national interests rarely impacts a single group. Throughout World War I, many groups were pulled into the conflict due to their own pursuit of national interests.
In the 3.8.2 Impact of National Interests assignment, you will analyze a situation involving one group's pursuit of national self-determination*. Through this situation, you will identify key stakeholders, the range of interests, and the underlying issues at the heart of the conflict. Then, you will suggest possible and reasonable solutions (or compromises) for the stakeholders and others who may be impacted by the pursuit of self-determination*.
*Remember, self-determination is the power to control one's own affairs. It is the power of people in a country or nation to make decisions about what is in their interest.

Student Example: 3.8.2 Response (India) After a lengthy period of colonial rule and not being consulted in regards to their economic control and self-government, India deserved the right to achieve self-determination away from British interests. However, it would be irresponsible for Britain to suddenly withdraw their control and influence from India entirely, as the country could potentially fall into disorganization as various groups, especially in light of the caste system attempt to gain power. In addition, it is unrealistic to think Britain would give up their economic interests in India entirely. But, cooperation with and supporting an Indian government would be key to address the rights Indians have to be equal stakeholders and benefit from the goods and exports from their own land. With the support of the UN to mediate, and create a more equitable political and economic system, Indians could progressively achieve and regain the power they have so long been kept from in their own country. |
