Ultranationalism and Genocide Assignment
Although the Holocaust is arguably the most horrendous (and prominent) example of genocide, other cases of genocide and ethnic cleansing have occurred in the world. In the 4.6.2 Ultranationalism and Genocide assignment, you will research how ultranationalism leads to genocide. Then, you will create a multimedia presentation to explain the stages and aftermath of a genocide.
How do we address the legacies left behind from acts of ultranationalism?
|
Before you begin the assignment, review the term "genocide". Genocide is defined as (from Voices Into Action):
- actions which are deliberate, with an intent to destroy (a whole or part of) a national, ethnic, political, racial, or cultural group,
- killing members of a specific group,
- causing serious bodily or mental harm to a specific group,
- removing or limiting the basic conditions of life in an attempt to physically impact a specific group,
- taking measures to impact births in a specific group, and
- forcing transfers or the removal of children from a specific group.
In the 4.6.2 Ultranationalism and Genocide assignment you will choose one instance of genocide provided below, and, using at least three research sources, show the development of ultranationalism through the eight stages of genocide. Then, you will organize your research into a multimedia presentation (with links, maps, images, poems/quotes/songs, or other media) to show how your chosen genocide developed through the eight stages.
While pages in the
Understanding Nationalism textbook and links to research sites have been provided, you are expected to do additional research, summarize/paraphrase the information in your own words,
and record at least three research sources.
A multimedia presentation can take many forms. Some examples of multimedia presentations have been
submitted in PowerPoint, Prezi, a Word document with embedded images, links, pictures, poems/songs, and maps (with explanations attached), photo essays, or videos. The explanation of the multimedia presentation may be submitted as an
audio file, as long as the audio is accompanied by a visual/media presentation portion.
Feel free to contact your teacher if you have questions about your 4.6.2 multimedia presentation. Example multimedia presentation formats: |
*NOTE: Both the research component and the multimedia presentation must be submitted in order to complete the 4.6.2 Ultranationalism and Genocide assignment.
