ELA3105-ABED_1: 1.3b Short Story Analysis: Paragraph

If you have received feedback on your two tables from 1.3a, you are ready to complete this assignment. Contact your teacher if you need assistance incorporating the feedback into your written paragraph.

Remember that you are answering this question: How does the author use one short story element to develop an essential question?

Step 1	Choose one of the short stories and one of the elements from your second table in 1.3a. (Elements: plot, character, setting, conflict, tone, mood, theme, symbolism, word choice.)
Step 2	Choose one of the following Essential Questions (EQs): To what degree can an individual’s choices and actions influence the direction of his or her life? Why is it important to be responsible to others on a personal, local, global, and/or digital level? What does it mean to be successful and what role does failure play? How does an individual’s perspective of, and response to, a crisis define him or her?
Step 3	Write a critical response in the form of one paragraph analysing how the author used the element to develop the essential question. Start with a strong thesis (your one sentence answer to your essential question that includes the name of the element you'll be discussing). Refrain from using first person singular ("I", "me", "my", etc.) and first person plural ("we," "our," etc.). Avoid using second person ("you", "your", etc.) because second person is considered to be informal and friendly language. Critical response writing is more formal than personal response writing. Don't use contractions because they are considered to be informal language. Follow the format outlined below: Topic Sentence: What are you going to be discussing? Evidence/Explanation x 3: Provide 3 pieces of support (specific quotations) from the text and explore how that strengthens your argument. Concluding Sentence: Wrap up your paragraph.
Step 4	Submit your completed assignment. Please submit a PDF or MS Word file instead of sharing a Google doc link with me. It's a simple step to save your Google doc as a PDF and upload the PDF into Moodle. This saves you from having to remember to share your Google doc. Also, if I have a sub, the sub won't have access to your Google doc. It is expected that you have gone through the writing process to produce a polished piece of writing for this assignment.

Note: Later in the course, you will be extending this work into a critical essay using one of the short stories.
