Step 1: Before you begin, examine the rubric to see how your assignment will be assessed.
Step 2: Read and listen to Darcy's student example. Click on the pins on her cover page to read her analysis of each image.

assessed her work according to the rubric. NOTE: Your assignment does not need a cover page like Darcy's, and though she analyzed three images, you only need to analyze two.
Step 3: Research and select two images that are complex enough to analyze visual techniques and themes. Contact your teacher if you aren't sure your image selections will work well.
- You may select almost any type of visual text: photographs, graphic designs, cartoons, drawings, advertisements, etc.
- Images can be commercial or artistic. Because this is a research assignment, unpublished images, such as ones you created yourself, will not be allowed.
- Many online news sites have a "Week in Pictures" or "Photos of the Week" series. You can search either of these phrases on the Internet to help you locate suitable images.
Step 4: Note the following source citation
information because you must include it on your assignment. Cite all images
properly. You do not have to create a bibliography, but
you do need to put source information underneath each image.

Step 5: Download two copies of the OPTIONAL "What? So What? Now What?" charts, one for each image, in
Word, Google doc, or PDF format to help you plan your assignment. THIS PLANNING SHEET IS NOT WHAT YOU WILL HAND IN.
Step 6: Complete the OPTIONAL charts as you analyze each image. You wonβt hand in these charts, but they will be helpful to you as you complete your assignment.

Step 7: Choose how you want to use to create your portfolio. Here are several suggestions of applications you can use and tutorials to help you use them.

Step 8: Create each page of your portfolio. Display one image per page. Using your notes from the What? So What? Now What? chart, write a theme statement for the image, and identify three or more specific visual techniques used to convey the theme in each image, and note those techniques on or near each image. Explain the effect each technique has on the image. Remember to use the Unlocking the Mysteries of Visual Images tutorial to help you complete your assignment.
Step 9: Save your assignment in the following way: Your Full Name 1.2 Visual Portfolio.

Step 10: Submit your assignment in the space provided. Be certain to accept the Turnitin software agreement. This is required, and your assignment will not be marked until you have done so.
