2.4 Short Stories in Context
Completion requirements
Assignment
Now you will apply what you have learned about context.
Follow each of these steps, in order, to complete your assignment.
Step 1: Before you begin, examine the rubric to see how your assignment
will be assessed.
Step 2: Read Riley’s 2.4 Short Stories in Context example assignment.
Be sure to take a look at the rubric included so you can see how he was assessed.
Note: Riley used Jim Parson’s story, “Every Person Gets Their Due—Especially on Christmas Eve: Unforgettable Memories of a Father’s Values” which is not one of the stories you can use on this assignment. It is for
example purposes only.
Step 3: Review what you
learned about context earlier in this unit.
Step 4: Choose which story you would like to use for this assignment:

If you completed the Alternate 2.2 Assignment, you may also use this story:
- “Garson” by Wayson Choy
- “Long, Long After School” by Ernest Buckler
Step 5: Choose which element of context you wish to change.
- “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” by Brian Aldiss
- Think about which aspect of context has the most influence on the story.
- Perhaps where or when the story takes place is most important, so in that case, you could change the story’s setting.
- Maybe who was involved in the story is very important, and in that case, you could change a key character or change which characters were present during an important scene.
- On the other hand, maybe some antecedent event that occurred before the story even began had an impact on the story line, so in that case, you could change what happened in that antecedent event.
Step 6: Rewrite a portion of the original story (just a paragraph or two) to show the impact of changing the context.
Step 7: Write a one-paragraph explanation of what aspect of the context you changed and exactly how that impacted the story. Your paragraph will be assessed on sentence fluency as well as on ideas, so be sure to apply what you learned in the sentence fluency lesson as you write.
Step 8: Proofread.
Step 9: Save your document in the following way: Your Full Name 2.4 Short Stories in Context.
- Check your paragraph for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
- Read it aloud to check that sentences are worded clearly and the paragraph makes sense.
- Read it aloud again to check for sentence fluency (varied sentence lengths and sentence beginnings).
Step 10: Submit your assignment in the space provided.
