Step 1: Before you begin, examine the rubric to see how your assignment will be assessed.

Step 2: Read Darcy’s 2.9 Comparison Essay PLAN example assignment. Be sure to read the rubric included so you can see how she was assessed.

NOTE: Darcy wrote her essay plan on two characters from two short stories she read earlier in Unit 2. However, you will be writing about at least one character from your chosen novel. She also wrote on the role of success and failure in living well. You, on the other hand, will be writing on one of the essential questions listed below.

Step 3: Choose which ONE of the following essential questions you’d like to focus on in your essay:

What are the benefits to ourselves, or to those around us, in using our skills and talents?

In what way can a person change the course of his or her life through a single action?

Step 4: Choose two characters (at least one from your novel)—one who is a positive example of the essential question and one who is a negative example.

Step 5: Download a copy of the 2.9 Comparison Essay Planning Sheets. There are two versions: Outline Option #1 (in Word, Google doc, or PDF) or Outline Option #2 (in Word, Google doc, or PDF). Choose the one that most appeals to you.

Step 6: Review the thesis statement formula and the tutorial on planning an introduction and conclusion to help you complete your essay planning sheet.

Step 7: Complete the planning sheets as directed.

Step 8: Save your assignment in the following way: Your Full Name 2.9 Comparison Essay PLAN.

Step 9: Submit your assignment for assessment in the space provided.
