Unit 1

What is Courage?

Lesson 7

Reader's Notebook Assessments (Formative)

Facing a Challenge

In this lesson, you will read pages 18 to 26 of Literacy in Action 4A.

Today’s readings involve challenges for which characters must decide how they will face and overcome one or more big problems.
You will analyze (Think about) how the characters meet their challenges.

As you read the story, use the prediction strategy. This reading strategy was discussed in the lesson on Mia’s Problem. If you need a review, go to Mia’s Problem.

You will practise making inferences with another inference game. If you need a review, go to A New Beginning.

You will have further practice with prefixes and suffixes.

Challenge Story Choices

For this assessment, you will choose one of two stories about real people who must deal with challenge.

(Of course, you may read them both – the more reading, the better!)

Decide which story you will read. Then use the reading strategies of inferring and predicting to complete the worksheet for that story. If you have any questions about meaning in the story you chose, contact your teacher.

Click the coloured tabs below to select which story you will read, to learn how characters faced their challenge.

Catch the Dream

This story is about two people who plan to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents.
