7.3 Novel Role Assignment

The Assignment

Now it is time to consider the novel in light of the essential questions. For this assignment, choose a role from Column A, a role from Column B, and an essential question from Column C. The projects you complete as the author/artist and the archivist/analyst, will examine your chosen essential question and how it was developed throughout the entire novel.

The Author

The author is a creative role, using ideas and details from the novel to create an original text(s).

You can write speeches, poems, songs, newspaper articles… you name it!

With your original text, you will compose a short paragraph that identifies and explains your choices in writing your own text.

The Archivist

An archivist collects “stuff” that relates to a common idea. This process is similar to the evidence you collected for the Macbeth trial in Module 2.

As an archivist, you will search for and gather outside sources that connect to the novel and your chosen essential question.

You may find a movie that was based on the same theme as the novel, a poem that describes a setting in the novel, or a newspaper article about an event that relates to the novel. Include at least three other sources.

You must include a written response that explains the connections between each source and the novel.

You will also need to create a bibliography so be sure to keep track of where you found your sources.

What influence do others have on who we become?

What drives our need to belong?

How important is it to pursue our passions?

What does it mean to "live well"?

The Artist

As an artist, you will visually represent your essential question as it is developed in the entire novel.

You can choose any form of original text to represent your understanding.

You might create portraits of the main characters, a slide presentation, an online poster ... there are too many options to mention!

With your representation, you will compose a written response that identifies and explains your choices in creating it.

The Analyst

As an analyst, you will focus on collecting key quotations from the novel that relate to the essential question you are studying.

You will choose at least six quotations that illustrate the essential question best. Consider significant quotations from the start to finish of the novel.

For each quotation you will provide the context for the quotation. What situation prompted the quotation to be said? You will provide the entire quotation, including page number. Finally, you will explain how this quotation relates to the element you are studying. How is this quotation significant?

Use your sticky note annotations to help you find content in the novel that is related to each of these questions.

Once you have completed this assignment, save it as Your Name 7.3 Novel Role Assignment and submit it for assessment.
